I forgot to mention two of my favorite places to get free supplies. Always check the local craigslist.com and freecycle.org. Both can provide all kinds of stuff from tools to fasteners and lumber. Sometimes it's junk, but I've saved tons before.
Right now I am waiting to hear from some guy who has a box of loose tools, fasteners and a grinder. I'll keep you in the loop and post pictures if I score.
